Animal Nepal is a non-profit organisation established in 2009, working towards putting in place a good standard of animal welfare in Nepal. We believe that all animals deserve to be healthy, happy and treated with kindness. Through our various programs, awareness campaigns and advocacy work, we aim to continue being the voice for the voiceless.
Our history dates back to 2004, when Dutch journalist and long term resident of Nepal, Lucia De Vries together with friends Jessy, Maria, Roselle and Jiggy established Animal Nepal as a business. By running a coffee shop and an outlet for pet items in Jhamsikhel, Lalitpur, the income from the business was used to provide treatment for sick and injured stray dogs. The company also launched some awareness campaigns on animal welfare as well as organizing an annual spaying camp for pets.
In 2008, Pramada Shah (Social activist and animal lover) met Lucia and both recognized that Animal Nepal could do so much more for the well being of animals as an NGO. Therefore, in 2009, Pramada registered Animal Nepal as an NGO and has since overseen the organization as its President. Since becoming an NGO, Animal Nepal has launched long-running programs to help working equines and stray dogs. Animal Nepal is a leading voice in animal welfare and has led and become part of several campaigns which has highlighted gross abuse of animal welfare such as religious sacrifice of animals, plight of stray cows, elephant abuse, mass poisoning of stray dogs, etc.
Through our work, there have been many positive and meaningful changes in the lives of many animals, especially working and stray animals. With the help of our partners and supporters, Animal Nepal will continue to work towards our goal of ending unnecessary suffering of all animals.
