About us – A voice for the voiceless

Animal NepalAbout us – A voice for the voiceless

Animal Nepal is a non-profit organisation established in 2009, promoting animal welfare in Nepal. We believe that all animals have the right to live a life free from pain and they deserve to be treated with kindness. Through our various long-running interventions, awareness campaigns and advocacy work, we continue to be the voice for the voiceless.

Our history dates back to 2004, when Dutch journalist and long term resident of Nepal, Lucia De Vries together with friends Jessy, Maria, Roselle and Jiggy started Animal Nepal as a café and an outlet for pet items in Jhamsikhel, Lalitpur. The income from the business was used to provide treatment for sick and injured stray dogs. The company also launched awareness campaigns on animal welfare as well as organizing an annual spay/neuter camp for dogs.

In 2008, Pramada Shah, a social activist and animal lover met Lucia and both recognized that Animal Nepal could do so much more for the well being of animals as an NGO. Therefore, in 2009, Pramada registered Animal Nepal as an NGO and has since overseen the organization as its President. Since 2009, Animal Nepal has launched programs and staged interventions to help working equines, stray dogs, rhesus monkeys, elephants, layer hens, livestock and many other animals.

Animal Nepal is a leading voice in animal welfare and has led and become part of several campaigns which has highlighted gross abuse of animals such as religious sacrifice of animals, plight of stray cows, elephant abuse, mass poisoning of stray dogs, etc.

Through our work, we have been successful in achieving many positive and meaningful changes for animal welfare. With the help of our partners and supporters, Animal Nepal will continue to work towards our goal of ending the suffering of all animals.
